The Million-Mile Porsche

For a car enthusiast, we might say that cars fall into two categories: classics on one hand and daily drivers on the other. Rare and envied is the enthusiast who can manage to combine these into the same car. Even rarer is the classic daily driver that has stupendously high mileage and still looks great.

Guy Newmark, a resident of San Pedro, California, is the owner of just such a rarity. His 1964 Porsche 356C, named “Blue”, was purchased new by a family member, and has been driven every day for nearly five decades. Surprisingly, a great deal of the car is still original, including of course the odometer, which indicates a dizzying 980,000 miles.

No other Porsche in history has equaled that kind of endurance, much less done so on only three engine rebuilds and one transmission rebuild. While we love to admire modern supercars as much as anyone else, our hats are off to the Porsche engineers of the 1960s. This elegantly simple coupe was truly built to last, and with Newmark’s help, it’s lasting.

Blue has many an admirer on the internet, which recently helped it escape an untimely demise. After it was stolen from Newmark’s garage in San Pedro, it was recovered with very little damage, thanks in part to a woman who saw an article on a website, asking for help in recovering this famous stolen car. Once Blue has recovered at his mechanic, Newmark plans a party to celebrate the car’s 50th birthday. We hope there will be many more to come.
